If you have been unable to conceive for a long time, opt for the intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) procedure. It is the best way to treat infertility and plan for a successful pregnancy. This treatment is best suited for treating severe male infertility or recurrent implantation failure. The ICSI treatment is a part of in vitro fertilisation (IVF). The embryologist injects the sperm into the egg to fertilise it. Once the embryo transfer is done, you can expect to achieve pregnancy.
What Does Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection Mean?
Intracytoplasmic sperm injection refers to introducing a healthy sperm inside the cytoplasm of an egg. Endocrinologists give the injection during the ICSI procedure. This reproductive technique helps couples who have failed to get pregnant reach fertilisation.
How Is The ICSI Treatment Different From IVF?
ICSI, or intracytoplasmic sperm injection, is a part of the IVF treatment. With the traditional IVF treatment, the certified embryologist incubates thousands of sperm to fertilise the eggs. Hence, there are chances that the eggs might not fertilise sometimes.
Unlike the IVF treatment, the ICSI process involves directly injecting a single sperm into a single egg. In both ICSI and IVF, the fertilised egg is implanted into the uterus. You will conceive if the embryo attaches itself to the lining of the uterus and is able to grow in the uterus.
What Is Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) In ICSI Treatment?
The ICSI process uses assisted reproductive technology (ART) for fertility treatment. ART refers to lab-based fertility treatments in which the fertilisation of sperm with egg takes place outside the body.
Success rate of the Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection
The success rate of the ICSI technique is the same as traditional IVF treatments. In the 6 in 10 IVF procedures, the ICSI procedure is applied by doctors. The fertilisation chances in the ICSI procedure are generally 65% to 95%.
Who Can Consider An ICSI Treatment?
The ICSI treatment is applied when male infertility issues are the obstacle to conceiving. An endocrinologist or healthcare provider may suggest an ICSI treatment for the following reasons:
-
Several male factors, including low sperm count, low motility, abnormal morphology, etc.;
-
Recurrent implantation failure;
-
Sperm may have trouble penetrating eggs for unknown reasons;
-
Low fertilisation rates;
You can prefer choosing an ICSI treatment for other following reasons:
-
If traditional IVF has failed to fertilise the embryo
-
If the female partner or egg donor is 35 years or older
-
If you previously used frozen eggs
Who Performs The Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection?
A well-trained embryologist performs the ICSI treatment. At Benison IVF and health care clinic, we have qualified embryologists to offer you assured ICSI treatment. We specialise in diagnosing and treating infertility as well as fertility preservations.
Before the ICSI treatment
The IVF specialists will perform the egg retrieval process to collect the eggs. The sperm samples are collected by masturbation. The methods used to collect the eggs before the ICSI treatment are as follows:
-
Ovulation induction (ovarian stimulation): Medicinal injections are provided to the person supplying eggs for at least eight to fourteen days. The injections stimulate the ovary to produce mature and healthy eggs to initiate pregnancy. A shot of the human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) injection or Lupron is given at the final maturation period of the eggs.
-
Egg retrieval: Transvaginal ultrasound technology is used in the egg retrieval process. In the process, a thin needle is passed into the ovary through the wall of the vagina under ultrasound guidance. The suction device connected to the needle removes the eggs from the ovary. You are given mild anaesthesia, and the entire egg retrieval process is painless.
The sperm collection process is done on the same day of the egg retrieval. The conditions for sperm collection include the following:
-
The person who provides the sperm must abstain from sexual intercourse or masturbation for at least two to three days before the sperm collection.
-
The person should collect the semen, preferably at the clinic.
The semen analysis is performed immediately to determine sperm quality, volume, and mobility. People suffering from azoospermia, anejaculation, or retrograde ejaculation, may be advised of different procedures for sperm collection. It is the same if your male partner has an unsuccessful vasectomy reversal. You can prefer a fertility hospital instead of a fertility clinic for electroejaculation and microscopic testicular sperm extraction procedures. At Benison IVF and health care clinic, we also preserve and store sperm for later use.
Procedure of the Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection
The intracytoplasmic sperm injection is a part of the IVF treatment to help you get pregnant if you cannot conceive because of infertility in your male partner. The following is the detailed procedure through which the ICSI procedure is done:
-
In this process, the immobilisation of the sperm takes place using a thin needle/using chemical PVP (Polyvinylpyrrolidone).
-
The needle is inserted into the egg to reach the cytoplasm.
-
The doctor then injects the sperm into the cytoplasm.
-
Once fertilisation happens, the needle is removed from the egg.

After The ICSI Procedure
Monitoring the fertilised egg is essential for successful fertilisation in the ICSI procedure. Once the ICSI process is done, the embryologist will monitor the signs of successful fertilisation. The cell division to form a blastocyst occurs within five to six days of fertilisation. The embryologist evaluates the blastocyst’s grading to check the embryo quality.
The doctor inserts a catheter into the vagina to inject the embryo into the uterus. However, the embryo must line up with the uterus for a successful pregnancy. It is preferable to wait at least two weeks after the ICSI procedure to test your pregnancy.
The embryo transfer may start on the fifth or sixth day after the egg retrieval procedure. As you choose us for the ICSI treatment, we will discuss the detailed procedure of embryo transfer with you.
Advantages of the ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) treatment
The ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) treatment is more successful than traditional IVF treatment in conceiving in cases of male infertility. The primary advantage of the ICSI treatment is an enhanced fertilisation rate. ICSI can increase the chances for successful fertilisation for couples struggling with male factor infertility.

Does The ICSI Treatment Increase The Chances Of Having Twins Or Triplets?
Embryologists may often recommend ICSI treatment for a successful pregnancy. They may often use multiple eggs for the fertilisation process. However, multiple pregnancies can occur once you decide to transfer more than one embryo into the uterus. You can give birth to twins or triplets. Multiple pregnancies can also increase the chances of premature birth and other pregnancy-related complications.
If you and your partner have issues conceiving a child, we at Benison IVF and the health care clinic recommend the ICSI treatment. In vitro fertilisation (IVF) is thus helpful if you are troubled with male infertility. Contact us to schedule an appointment for the ICSI treatment and get information about the ICSI treatment cost.
