What Is IVF?

IVF, or In Vitro Fertilization, is a complex series of reproductive technologies. It is the most effective reproductive treatment to treat infertility. During the IVF treatment, the reproductive endocrinologists retrieve the mature eggs from the ovary to fertilize them with the male sperm. In the next process, the fertilized eggs are implanted in the uterus. The entire IVF process may take approximately three weeks. More intriguing, the process may be lengthy depending on the complexity of the treatment and if the entire treatment is divided into different parts.

Reproductive endocrinologists may use your eggs and sperm as well as a known or anonymous donor’s sperm or embryos for IVF treatment. There are also chances of using a gestational carrier in the treatment procedure.

The chances of the success rate in IVF treatment may depend on the following:

  • Your age
  • The causes of your infertility

Why Prefer IVF Treatment

As mentioned earlier, IVF is an effective medical procedure to treat infertility or genetic issues. You and your partner might also be able to prefer any less-invasive treatment or fertility drugs for increasing the production of intrauterine insemination or eggs. These fertility processes may increase the chances of the success rate of the IVF treatment.

You Can Prefer IVF Treatment For The Following Infertility Reasons:

  • Ovulation disorders: If your ovulation process is abnormal, insufficient, or absent, the number of eggs is insufficient for the fertilization process.
  • Endometriosis: In case the tissues implant in the same line or outside the uterus, it can affect the function of the ovary. Medically the fertility disorder is known as Endometriosis. The disorder can affect the function of the ovaries and the fallopian tubes.
  • Damage or blockage of the fallopian tube: There will be difficulties for an embryo to get fertilized if your fallopian tube is damaged or blocked.
  • Uterine fibroids: If there are benign tumours in your uterus, the infertility issue is known as uterine fibroids. It is most common in women who are in their 30s or 40s.
  • Issues in sperm production or function: A below-average concentration of sperm, weak sperm movement, disorders in sperm shapes, and sperm size abnormalities are often the cause of male infertility.
  • Any earlier tubal sterilization or removal: If your fallopian tubes were cut or blocked earlier, your chances of getting pregnant after the surgery is permanently disabled.
  • Fertility preservation in cancer and other critical health conditions: Radiation or chemotherapy in cancer patients can affect fertility chances. The case is the same for other critical diseases needing radiation treatment. In such health conditions, you can prefer to preserve your eggs frozen in an unfertilized state for future uses.
  • Unexplained infertility: Unexplained infertility refers to infertility cases that occur in couples despite evaluation.

The Initial Stage Of The IVF Treatment

The success rate of the IVF treatment may vary according to your age and medical issues. Ask us for detailed information regarding the costs of the entire IVF procedure.

Before the beginning of the IVF process, we recommend you the following screenings:

  • Ovarian reserve testing: The test is performed to determine the quantity and quality of your eggs. A test of estradiol (estrogen), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and the anti mullerian hormone is done during the initial days after your menstrual cycle. The test results are often combined with an ovary ultrasound to decide your fertility condition.
  • Analysis of semen: If an analysis of the semen is not performed at the initial stage of the fertility evaluation, we recommend doing the test to start the IVF treatment.
  • Embryo transfer (mock): A mock embryo transfer is performed to understand the in-depth uterine cavity. The technique is mandatory for the successful implantation of the embryo in the IVF treatment.
  • Infectious disease screening: In the IVF treatment process, both you and your partner will be screened for infectious diseases (if any).
  • Examination of the Uterine: At the beginning of the IVF process, the reproductive endocrinologists will examine the uterus lining. The test also involves sonohysterography. In the sonohysterography test, the fluid is injected through the cervix into your uterus. Also, an ultrasound is performed to get information about the uterus. During the sonohysterography, a thin and light telescope is inserted through the vagina and cervix of your uterus for examination purposes.

The detailed procedure of the IVF treatment

The IVF treatment includes five stages. The stages include:

  • Ovarian stimulation
  • Egg retrieval
  • Sperm retrieval
  • Fertilization
  • Embryo transfer

Ovarian stimulation: The IVF cycle begins with the ovarian stimulation process. Synthetic hormones are injected to stimulate the ovaries for the production of multiple eggs. The medication applied in the procedure is as follows:

  • Oocyte maturation medication
  • Ovarian stimulation medication
  • Premature ovulation medication
  • Uterus lining preparation medication

Egg retrieval: The egg retrieval process is done at the second stage of the IVF treatment. The egg retrieval process is done after 34 to 36 hours from the final stimulation injection and before ovulation.

During the process, you will be given pain medication, and sedation will be performed.

The egg retrieval process is performed through a transvaginal ultrasound.

If a transvaginal ultrasound is not accessible, an abdominal ultrasound is done.

The eggs are retrieved from the follicles using a needle. The egg retrieval process may take approximately 20 minutes.

You might experience cramping, pressure, or fullness feeling immediately after the egg retrieval process.

A nutritive liquid is used to place the eggs. Healthy and mature eggs will be easily mixed with the sperm to create the embryo.

Sperm retrieval:If your partner’s semen is used in the IVF treatment, you must provide a sample of your partner’s semen sample. The semen sample can be collected through the masturbation process. Other processes, including a testicular aspiration and usage of donor sperm, may also be used.

Fertilization:The fertilization process includes the following procedure:

Conventional insemination: During Conventional insemination fertilization, the incubation procedure of the sperm and mature eggs are done overnight.

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI): In the Intracytoplasmic sperm injection fertilization procedure, a single sperm is injected into a single healthy egg.

In some cases, also doctors recommend other procedures, including:

Preimplantation genetic testing

Assisted hatching

Embryo transfer:The final procedure in the IVF treatment is embryo transfer. The embryo transfer usually takes place two to five days after egg retrieval.

A mild sedative is given.

Generally, it is a painless procedure. However, you might face mild cramping.

A catheter will be inserted into your vagina to implant the embryo.

The catheter syringe contains one or more embryos, and the doctor places the embryo using this syringe.
